Drum Roll Please...

This is for you Alan...You were right on about the Toyota.

Specs:
1982
4 cylinder, diesel
24 mpg
4WD
Hard Top
4 speed manual

Don't know if yours was this way, Alan, but 15 seconds with the block heater is a requirement before every start, otherwise you drain the battery. Found that one out the hard way the first weekend that I had it :)
Here are a few indoor pics, as requested. Note the lack of defrost or any type of climate controls. Everything is in km. Steve remembers riding in your Jeep, Alan, through the mountains of Tegucigalpa.

We love the cavernous glove compartment and spacious interior.

wow...nice pics...I'd love to take it for a spin sometime. I presume yours works off glow plugs like mine...I just let those glow plugs turn a bright orange/red and started right up...never had any kind of block heater. I am no mechanic and the diesel was totally new to me...couldn't even tell you what most parts were under the hood. I didn't recognize much of anything! Maybe your glow plugs are weak or perhaps more likely (if this has anything to do with it) the battery is just a cheapo from Central or South America and just can't quite get the glow plugs hot enough on their own. I don't suppose your situation is quite right but the machine is 27+ years old. It's amazing that it runs so well. Toyota made some great trucks.

Oops... sorry, just a matter of terminology. I meant to say glow plugs. I don't know why it came out block heater, perhaps because it was the first time that I have said it in English. Too much spanish is causing me to forget how to say normal things in English. Anyhow, you are correct; about 15 seconds with the glow plugs (I assume they are red-hot, though I have not seen them) and it fires right up. I agree, Toyota made some beauties, and these are some of the best of the beauties. Would love to take it with me to the States as I understand they are worth a mint there. When we come to visit you are welcome to take it for a spin.

my '81 had a little grated-over hole on the dash...left of steering wheel...I could see them get hot and when bright...they were ready. good come-back by the way...yeah right...you didn't know what they were called! hee-hee!

so that's what that "grated over hole is for". The guy that sold it to me claimed it was a buzzer for an overheated engine...or at least that was what I understood...but now that I think about it he probably told me the right thing, its just that I really don't speak any language very well. And I thought you said that you didn't know anything mechanically. As usual you are showing me up. Oh well, at least I was able to beat you every time at computer golf. But seriously thanks for the tip; I'll have to check that out.
